The Intimate Landscape Belgrave St Ives 8 – 29 October 2018

This October, Belgrave St Ives presents The Intimate Landscape, an exhibition of new paintings by artist Jessica Cooper RWA. This collection of works is inspired by two separate yet distinctly parallel landscapes – St Ives in the artist’s home county of Cornwall, and the village of Messanges in South West France – both of which have special meaning to the artist. Similar in their coastal beauty, with wide white sands, simple architecture and laid back coastal culture, the essence of these two villages are defined on canvas in Cooper’s distinctly reductive style. Created almost as a sketchbook collection of works, comprising large scale landscape paintings and a series of smaller works, they mark Cooper’s return to painting the landscape after two years of work in digital and mixed media projects in the UK and United States.

In addition, the artist has created a three-minute film of moving images which contextualises the collection. Entitled I Never Want To Lose Another Day, the film gives personal insight into Cooper’s relationship with St Ives and Messanges, and captures the peace and beauty of these unique Atlantic locations. The film will be on show in the gallery throughout the exhibition.

Jessica Cooper has lived and worked in Cornwall’s West Penwith for most of her life. She studied at Falmouth College of Art, and at Goldsmith’s, University of London, and is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, Penwith Society of Artists, and is an elected RWA. She exhibits regionally, nationally and internationally on a regular basis, including exhibitions at The Exchange and Newlyn Art Gallery, the RWA and Tate St. Ives.

Belgrave St Ives

Belgrave St Ives specialises in Modern British and Contemporary Art. There is an emphasis on work by artists associated with Cornwall from the 1930s to the present time. The gallery is the only private art gallery in Cornwall showing regular exhibitions of work by major artists associated with the St Ives Modern Period as well as exhibitions of works by other select Modern British and Contemporary Artists. The gallery works with a number of artists, artists’ estates, collectors and other galleries, to produce an annual programme of changing monthly one-person and themed exhibitions usually accompanied by published material.

PADRAIG MAC MIADHACHAIN A Life of Painting  (1929 – 2017)

New One-Person Exhibition:

Based in Swanage, Dorset from the early 1950s and working from studios in various parts of the world, Pádraig Mac Miadhacháin established a full time career painting for a living and living to paint.

Looking at places through the lens of colour is core to Pádraig Mac Miadhacháin’s work, and so we can understand why he over-wintered in places like the Balearic Islands (1950s), the Canary Islands (1960s and 1970s) and St Ives (1990s onwards), and how this fits with his earliest memories of his sea-side holidays on the east coast of Ireland. However, he always returned home to his adopted Swanage, where he continued to paint, swim, walk and ‘mooch along the beach’ (his words). This retrospective exhibition is the first attempt to view Mac Miadhacháin’s oeuvre in a chronological order. It is interesting to see not only the evolution of a personal visual language but also the artist’s ability to move from abstract to figurative and back again, from tonal painting to high chroma, minimalist to narrative, dependent on the subject, and artistic intent. The experiences of travel and the discovery of alternative cultures fed directly into his work and several paintings in this exhibition illustrate these various cultural references.

Pádraig Mac Miadhacháin was born in 1929 in Downpatrick, County Down, and trained at Belfast College of Art and the National College of Art in Dublin where he focused on portraiture before beginning his exhibiting career in 1951. Studying at Belfast and Dublin was a good solid training in technique and one that was to prove of huge underlying significance when his interest in much more contemporary art began to grow in the early 60s, following the winning of a Polish Government Scholarship to Krakow in 1960 and the resulting friendship with the landscape painter Piotr Potworowski, an artist with close links to the St Ives School. Further influence is suggested by Nicholas Usherwood in the catalogue essay to the new exhibition, where he points to “…an experimental shift of direction almost certainly confirmed by the shows he had alongside such distinguished Irish contemporary painters as Louis LeBrocquy, Camille Souter and Gerard Dillon in the Irish Exhibitions of Living Art at around the same time”.

Later in his career, the artists of the St Ives School were important influences; most notably, fellow Northern Irishman William Scott, Roger Hilton, Alfred Wallis and Ben Nicholson. Mac Miadhacháin was able to develop his own personal style without, at the same time, getting swamped by the tendency to abstraction at large.

Mac Miadhacháin travelled widely throughout North and South America, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Republic of Ireland. A long exhibiting career included 17 solo shows in London and exhibitions in Madrid, Dublin, Belfast, Las Palmas, Krakow, Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver. He held a retrospective exhibition at the Molesworth Gallery, Dublin, in 1999, and in 2000 was one of three artists included in Fedden’s Choice at Lena Boyle Fine Art – an exhibition of the work of Mary Fedden’s favourite artists. The National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland and the Arts Council of Ireland hold examples of his work, which can also be found in private collections all around the world.

When we heard of plans to re-issue Sven’s book ‘The Dark Monarch‘, we were happy to be able to include the launch of the book with the exhibition of works by Sven that we had been planning for some time. When we then heard some time later that Tate St Ives were planning to use the title of the book as the title for their Autumn exhibition, it made sense for us to time our show to coincide with theirs, and it has been good to have a chance to work more closely with their curatorial team here in St Ives.

Those of you who have seen the Tate St Ives exhibition will know that it includes several works by Sven, many of which are on loan from Belgrave Gallery. The beautiful, striking owl, which we have been showing in our window overlooking Fore Street in Gallery Two…

SVEN BERLIN ‘Polymath’ – Installation

SVEN BERLIN ‘Polymath’ opened on Sat 7 Oct 2017 with a lively Private View, and has been very busy – St Ives thronging with visitors celebrating the full opening of the new Tate St Ives. The show here is being very well received, and it is great to have such a good number of Sven’s sculptures on display. There are also early drawings, voluptuous still lifes, glowing self portraits and Svenographic prints. We also have a display of books written by the artist. Sven Berlin – Polymath

A major name in St Ives post-War art, Sven Berlin entered the canon of history through the critically acclaimed Tate exhibition ‘The Dark Monarch: Magic and Modernity in British Art’ in which Modernism was repositioned.

Berlin quickly made his mark as a romantic and unorthodox figure within the creative milieu that was the St Ives art scene of the 1940s and 1950s and the name of the Tate exhibition took its title from his infamous book ‘The Dark Monarch’. The book is a colourful portrayal of several identifiable characters in the town and it led to libel actions that almost ruined him financially.

To note, he arrived in Cornwall before Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, and was a founder member of the Crypt Group (1946), which was the basis for the consolidation of the post-War school of British Modernism that St Ives became famous for. He was an adagio dancer before becoming a visual artist, and his powerful flamboyant personality clashed with several of the other artists centred around St Ives. In 1953 he left Cornwall in a horse and cart (people alive today still recount the story of him tearing away at a clatter and with speed) to live amongst the gypsy community of the New Forest finally settling in Dorset, where he died in 1999.

Berlin’s tremendous artistic output, traversed a wide range of media: sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, autobiography, novel writing and poetry. The graphic strength of Berlin’s two-dimensional work underpinned every element of his creative work, particularly the three-dimensional draughtsmanship to be found in his stone carving. It is a fact that all great sculptors are consummate drawers (see for example Elizabeth Frink, Frank Dobson, Gaudier Brzeska et al). In addition to this draftsmanship evident in the drawings and sculpture, the innate flamboyance of Berlin’s character was given full and vibrant expression in a series of beautifully rich still life works, natural history paintings and self-portraits, which can also be seen in the exhibition.

Berlin’s strength of character, which enabled him to reach the heights of artistic excellence while enduring grinding poverty, was matched by an immense physical strength enabling him to carve granite. Above all his life was characterised by an indomitable polymathic spirit. Belgrave St Ives represents the Estate of Sven Berlin and is pleased to continue the exhibition programme of this artist’s work that began in 1989 with Belgrave Gallery, London. Light is Alice Mumford’s essential subject. She creates paintings that bathe you in the lazy heat of summer or the white light of a crispy winter’s morning.

Belgrave St Ives is pleased to announce the sixth solo exhibition to be held in the gallery by the painter Alice Mumford. Thirty-four works have been especially created for this show. The artist asks the viewer to study and celebrate with her the importance of colour and how it can be used to picture the everyday ordinariness but also wonder of life. In one of her painting courses (she is regarded highly as a teacher of painting and excerpts can be found on online), she explains that people make the mistake in thinking that a photograph is a true depiction of something; she alludes to the fact that it is just one reality.

A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition with an essay by Dr Ian Massey.

Her work reflects the seasons. Here, Summer Heat on the Patio, Lesceave, Cornwall summons the optical effects of high summer, the way that motes swim and things momentarily appear to shimmer and dissolve as one narrows one’s gaze as it moves from shadow towards the glare of the sun. Frost and Early Morning Sun is equally though differently dramatic, its raked wintry light causing long bluish shadows whilst making hues in a bowl of fruit sharper. Quotes from great artists about colour accompany the following pages of the catalogue, and are selected to help look deeper into Alice’s work.

Mumford is a painter who is entirely focused on her craft. Following training at Dartington, Camberwell, Southwark and Falmouth Colleges of Art, she has become one of the most accomplished painters currently working in Cornwall. After early successes with Cobra & Bellamy, Julian Lax and Badcocks Gallery, Mumford has been represented by Belgrave St Ives since 2005, during which time she has established herself as a pre-eminent painter of still life interiors that draw heavily on her own domestic life. Sansom & Co published a first monograph of her work in 2015.

TERRY FROST A Book of Ideas

Following Terry Frost’s death in 2003, the studio contents were gradually relocated to a specially converted art store. Whilst archiving the artist’s collection some years later, a large format, cloth-bound sketchbook was discovered amongst the artist’s retained paintings and effects.

The richly illustrated volume contained over 50 paintings and collages. A number of these images were developed into known paintings or worked into recognisable print media editions, but some have remained as fascinating prototypes/imaginings of what might have been. Several of the artist’s favourite subjects are explored here, for example ‘Suspended Forms’, ‘Sun and Moon’ theme, the ‘Lorca’ series, etc. The book covers the period 1970s up to 1981.

We have selected a group of 32 individual works from the sketchbook to be mounted and framed for this exhibition. Mostly mixed media, all the works are a standard page size of 46 x 37cm single sheet and 46 x 74cm double sheet. The artworks have been reproduced for this exhibition catalogue in approximately the same sequence they appear in the original sketchbook, to follow the artist’s thought processes.

SIR TERRY FROST RA (1915 – 2003)

Frost was born in Leamington Spa within a working class family. He was encouraged to paint by the artist Adrian Heath, a fellow captive, whilst a Prisoner of War in Germany. Frost moved to St Ives in 1947 and formed part of the group of younger artists (including Sven Berlin, W Barns-Graham and Bryan Wynter) attracted to the place by the cheaper living costs, better climate/light than much of the UK and the other artists already established in the area – Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson etc.

Quickly gaining recognition amongst his peers, Frost was awarded the Gregory Fellowship at Leeds University (1952). Teaching at Leeds College of Art, he later became Professor of Painting at Reading University (a position he held until retiring from Teaching in 1981).

Frost exhibited extensively in the UK and Overseas in both one person and significant group exhibitions. He was one of a small number of British Artists at the time with an international reputation. He was elected Royal Academician in 1992 and Knighted for his services to Art and Art Education in 1998. His work is in major private and public collections worldwide including Tate Gallery, Arts Council and British Council. There is also an extensive bibliography for the artist.

Best know for his exuberant and colourful abstract paintings, collages and prints, Terry Frost shared his zest for art and life with boundless energy and enthusiasm.

BELGRAVE ST IVES

The gallery has a long association of working with the artist Terry Frost and subsequently with the Artist’s Estate. The artist’s first one-person show with the gallery was held in 1989.

The Belgrave Gallery was established in London in1974 and its sister gallery opened in St Ives in 1998, becoming independent as Belgrave St Ives in 2010. The gallery specialises in exhibiting Modern British and Contemporary Art with an emphasis on work produced in Cornwall.
